Institutional strategy

Machine Learning ranks amongst the epochal innovations of the last two centuries. Just like electricity, the computer and the internet, it is about to transform society and will shape the face of the Earth.

As a comprehensive university, Heidelberg university is

  • Driving fundamental research into the understanding of current and future machine learning
  • Using machine learning to enable the solution of long-standing problems in the sciences
  • Studying the impact of machine learning on our society.

Our science-based approach to machine learning, and our use of machine learning to solve important problems in the sciences is summarized by our motto “Science-based Machine Learning”.

Inside the university, this mission is accomplished by our excellence cluster STRUCTURES (pushing the limits of foundational understanding) and IWR (enabling applications in the humanities, life and natural sciences as well as engineering).

The Rectorate and the Departments for Maths & Computer Science, Physics & Astronomy, Engineering, Biosciences and Medicine support scientific machine learning by endowing or dedicating another seven professorships to the field by 2028.
